Chris Martin vs. Unfair Trade

Chris Martin, frontman for Coldplay, has long been a supporter of Oxfam’s Make Trade Fair Campaign. Please don’t confuse this campaign with the market phenomenon of ‘Fair Trade’, which is an alternative way of purchasing certain products (like coffee) through the existing trade system. The Make Trade Fair campaign is about the much BIGGER picture.. its about the way that hypocritical trade practices by the US and the EU cripple the Developing World’s ability to compete in a world market. The US and EU are both the biggest champions of Free Trade and its biggest subversives – protecting their own industries through barriers such as agricultural subsidies, whilst at the same time insisting that the Developing World remove all their barriers to free trade, sabotaging their food security and their ability to produce competitive exports. If the US and EU were to practice what they preach and remove or reduce their agricultural subsidies, the Developing World could make BILLIONS of dollars a year from the resulting increase in trade.
