Justice Rant #2

“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke … Then your light will break forth like the dawn”

Unless you’re dead or in a coma, you are probably aware of the impending Olympic games due to be held in Beijing, China, this year. You may also be aware that, contrary to the principles of Olympism, China has a deplorable human rights record that includes widespread use of the death penalty, restrictions on freedom of expression and religion and widespread violations of labor rights, and their annexation of Tibet and persecution of its people.

So should China even be hosting the Olympic games? People are divided on the issue. However, I believe that the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing can give the Chinese government an opportunity to demonstrate to its people and the world a commitment to the fundamental freedoms guaranteed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and in China’s own constitution. In the meantime, my thoughts and prayers are with the persecuted people of China and Tibet.
